The Yugoslav Institute of Meat Technology The Yugoslav Institute of Meat Technology was founded in 1955, by decree of the Yugoslav Association of Meat Processing Industry Firms, Peoples Committee of the city of Belgrade, and Peoples Committee of the „Zapadni Vračar“ Community. Until 1960, the Institute worked under the patronage of the Yugoslav Canning industry association and the Federal Chamber of Industry. Since then, it has been under the patronage of the Federal Chamber of Commerce. Institute have obtained in status of scientific and research institution in the year 1964.
In year 2000 government has changed public status of the Institute into scientific and research institution, which acts according to the Regulations for public administration. According to the statute of Scientific and research activity (Sl. Glasnik RS No110/05.) Institute has been accredited in June, 2006, as Scientific and development institute, and in august of the same year, it has been transformed from the public enterprise into the state owned Institution.
Since 1972 Institute is involved, first in establishing of National program of residue control in food of animal origin and later in its control and from 1985, by decree of the Federal Commission for Agriculture Yugoslav Institute of Meat Technology was designated as coordinate laboratory for system of control for monitoring of residues in tissues and organs of slaughtered animals and meat products on the state level.
All above mentioned activities were realized in close cooperation with EU authoritative commissions, which have confirmed the laboratory of the Institute as the reference laboratory for monitoring of residues during the visit and control in 1997 (European Commission Directorate general XXIV, doc.No.XXIV/1517/97).
Federal Institute for standardization recognized system of quality for the Institute according to the standards JUS ISO 9001:2001, in the year 2001, and Accreditation body of Serbia and Montenegro (JUAT) has awarded the Laboratory Department of the Institute Certificate of accreditation according to the standard JUS ISO 17025:2001, for 676 methods and 23 articles for assessment (meat, meat products, fish, milk and dairy products, eggs and egg products, honey and other bees products, dietetic food, animal feedstuff, etc.).
According to the Regulation of Europe Commission EC No 11682002, of June, 28th, 2002 the Institute of Meat Hygiene and Technology were assigned as authorized institution for the issuing of certificates of authenticity for export of beef originated from SRJ for EU market. EU had confirmed this Decision of nomination for the year 2009 (Commission Regulation EC No, 2234/2003, 2004, 2005, 2206, 2007, 2008).
Institute of Meat Hygiene and Technology worked out more than 500 technological projects of slaughterhouses, meat processing, rendering houses, and storage rooms on the territory of ex Yugoslavia and actual country.
Institute of Meat Hygiene and Technology for 50 years have been issuing scientific Journal “Meat techology” and besides that is publishing numerous books, monographs and books of abstracts.
Among its entire activities Institute organizes Meat Industry. There were 55 conference until now, on which prominent academics and scientists from country and abroad have presented their results of the latest scientific researches to the professionals from domestic meat industry. Since the year 2005 Conference has acquired status of International Conference.
Institute has the library with the scientific, professional literature and journals from country and abroad, and it serves researchers from the Institute as well as the all others, outside of the Institute.
Scientists and the researchers from the Institute regularly take part in scientific conferences in country and abroad, and Institute has close relationship with the similar institutes and faculties from Germany, Russia, Denmark, Holland, Greece, Hungary, France, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and etc.
Since its foundation until now Institute of Meat Hygiene and Technology has following activities in the scientific and research fields:
There are various scientific and professional personnel available in the Institute for performing all these researching activities from multidisciplinary point of view.
Beside that, it posses highly sophisticated equipment for wide range of analysis, which enables the Institute to fulfill all EU requirements for the control of food safety and quality. As approval for all that, there are successfully carried out proficiency testing, organized by CRL from Berlin, Germany, Fougers - France, FAPAS and FEPAS, Great Britain, in which Institute regularly participates since the year 2005.
